Understanding Total Sleep Needs

A baby's sleep needs change dramatically over the first two years of life. The Daily Sleep Calculator provides an evidence-based total range for how much your baby should sleep across a full 24-hour period.

This total includes both nighttime sleep and all daytime naps combined.

Why isn't there an exact number?

Just like adults, every baby is unique. A 6-month-old baby might be perfectly rested with 12.5 hours of total sleep, while another 6-month-old requires a full 15 hours to function well. Both are completely normal and healthy.

Rather than striving to hit a specific arbitrary number, use the recommended range as a healthy benchmark. Watch your baby's mood, development, and energy levels to gauge if they are getting enough rest.

Daytime Naps vs. Nighttime Sleep

While the total sleep requirement drops gradually as your child grows, the structure of that sleep shifts heavily. Newborns sleep relatively equally day and night. By 6 months, sleep consolidates significantly toward the nighttime, with naps making up a smaller (but still vital) portion of the 24-hour total.
